Disaster Preparation & Planning

  • From Bishop Kym: Disaster Preparedness

    My Siblings in Christ,

In chapter 24 of Matthew’s gospel, we hear that our job is to keep awake, to be aware, for the Lord may come at an unexpected time – at any time. There are many things in life which can happen unexpectedly, and when they do, our congregations and parishioners expect us to be ready.

In this spirit, I am writing to you about disaster preparedness. We all know that disasters may strike at any time, without warning or with only a little warning. They may be relatively small and local, or may be huge and have a regional impact.

I want our churches and missions in Colorado to be as well prepared for potential disasters as they can. I am setting out a goal, a challenge, for all our churches and missions to develop their own plans for preparedness between now and our Annual Convention in October 2022.

Under the leadership of the Rev. Canon Carl Andrews, we have developed a team of people with wide experience in disaster preparedness and response to provide knowledge and resources to support every church and mission in Colorado in doing this work. You can find many resources for disaster preparedness and recovery on the Episcopal Church in Colorado website.

In the next few months, Carl and his team will contact a number of churches directly as we identify places that are most susceptible to natural disasters such as fires and floods.

At the same time, every parish and mission can begin preparedness work on your own, using the resources on the Episcopal Church in Colorado website and at Episcopal Relief and Development.

If you need a helping hand, please contact the Rev. Canon Carl Andrews at Carl@EpiscopalColorado.org.

Blessings and thanks for your ministry in Colorado,

    Bishop Kym Lucas
