The Rev. Anne Richter

Why do you feel called to serve the Church as a Deputy to General Convention?

I served once before as a deputy in 2015, and learned the importance of Convention as a time for TEC to gather, pray, and discern together. I feel that I have gifts of discernment and an openness of mind to the views of others. As a newer priest in this diocese, I feel that I have now been here long enough to gain an understanding of life in this place, and yet still bring “new eyes and ears” to the deputation.

What life experiences and/or training can you offer as a resource to the Church?

Having lived abroad for eleven years as an adult, I gained an understanding and appreciation of different cultures, languages, and points of view. As an STM student of church history, I have learned about our roots, as well as our need to grow beyond the colonialism of our founding. As a former teacher, I can relate to youth, and I have leadership experience in various aspects of diocesan life (see below).

Describe your ministries, participation and experience in the Episcopal Church.

I was ordained to the priesthood in 2008 and have served as both rector and as associate for formation and family ministry. In my former diocese, I have served as “dean” for a deanery; instructor for the Diocesan School of Ministry and Diocesan Examining Chaplain; Diocesan Trustee for the University of the South; Commission on Ministry member and chair; Standing Committee member and chair; member of “Ecclesiastical Court;” member of diocesan Christian Formation Committee; chair of diocesan Credentials Committee; and member of the Bishop’s Advisory Council for Liturgy and Music. I was a deputy to General Convention in 2015 and served on the credentials committee. In this diocese, I was recently appointed to the Board of Examining Chaplains.

What aspects of our corporate life or issues facing the Church today hold particular interest or importance to you?

Having been a teacher of all ages and priest for youth and family ministry, I am most interested in Christian formation and the ability of the Church to share effectively the Good News of Jesus Christ with all ages, inside and outside of the church buildings.
I am also passionate about refugee ministry and the role that the Church has in welcoming the stranger.

How will your participation as part of the deputation enhance the life, mission and ministry of our diocese?

I hope that I can be an effective team member, communicating well and working responsibly as part of the deputation. I would not attend to push any particular agenda of my own.
