Lifelong Learning for Episcopal Lay Ministry

Both formation and continuing education for lay ministry in the Diocese of Colorado are enhanced through a study bibliography. This nine page bibliography, while designed to aid in a course of preparation to become a licensed lay minister, also has value as a source of reading materials for continuing education. Subjects covered include an introduction to Anglican Christianity, Worship and the Book of Common Prayer, Scripture and Preaching, Church History and Theology, Christian Life in the World, and Evangelism. These books can be used for group discussion or individual study, and suggestions for updates are welcome.

Numerous schools of theology offer courses (in person, online, or a hybrid) for laypersons. As an example, the Episcopal School at Claremont  is offering a series of lectures as part of its Education for Episcopal Leadership program; these lectures are available for laity as well as clergy. The Center for Anglican Learning and Leadership (a program of the Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley) offers online courses and weekend seminars on issues critical to clergy and lay ministers.  Lifelong learning opportunities can be accessed on the Faith and Wisdom website, which features a searchable index of events and programs.

Some dioceses (such as Montana) have compiled lists of website links for continuing education, for information and without endorsement. Other Episcopal dioceses in the United States offer coursework, independent study or direct instruction by clergy. Through the Stanton Center in the Diocese of Dallas, courses offered include Old and New Testament surveys, evangelism, apologetics, homiletics and theology.

The Diocese of Colorado has developed a comprehensive list of continuing education resources for deacons, many of which would be of value to lay ministers.

The Diocese of Colorado also provides comprehensive programs in congregational development through the Church Development Institute and  Leadership Workshops for Wardens, Vestry members and clergy. Courses such as Safeguarding God’s Children and Safeguarding God’s People are offered regularly by the Diocese, as is anti-racism training. Educational sessions are also featured at the annual diocesan convention and at the clergy conference.

Education for Ministry courses allow lay leaders to experience deeper faith through bible study and discussions of the relationship of faith and life experience. EFM may be experienced through face-to-face small groups or on line. Lay leaders seeking to act upon God’s vision of justice for the poor and disenfranchised are encouraged to explore  Just Faith ministries.
