Honoring and
Protecting Creation

Called as Christians to this Work

In living out our baptismal covenant to strive for justice and peace among all people, we are called to tend to the planet that houses and nourishes all people and to have wisdom and reverence in this work so that the earth is a source of healthy life for each of the more than 8 billion people now inhabiting the planet, as well as for those who come after us. Created in the image of God, we are co-creators–fellow workers–inspired to bring about healing and wholeness when we see sickness and brokenness. We see the suffering of people that is caused by lack of clean water, clean air, and nutrient-rich food. We see the many signs of environmental degradation. We can’t ignore the impact of our habits and lifestyles on the earth that supports all people.

Diocesan Resolution

In October 2022, the 135th Annual Convention of the Episcopal Church in Colorado passed the resolution “Call for Creation Care Action” sponsored by the Creation Care Team for the Episcopal Church in Colorado. The resolution called on all congregations to engage in the work of caring for creation. A survey in early 2023 assessed ways congregations in our diocese were already engaged in the work of caring for creation. A second survey was sent out in early 2025 to help us understand how our diocese has grown in the depth and breadth of its creation care ministry. Peace with Creation: Diocesan Retreat for Leaders and Advocates in the Work of Caring for Creation

September 26-28 at Cathedral Ridge. Grounded in the ecumenical Season of Creation, we will explore the troubling realities of our awesome and diverse State of Colorado: its forests, water, plains, and urban environments. As we lean into the work of healing our planet and striving for beloved community for all creation, we will learn ways to connect and collaborate with other communities of faith, ecumenical and inter-faith, as well as nonprofits in our communities already doing the work of ecological care and eco-justice. Guiding us will be Isaiah 32:14-18, which calls on the Holy Spirit to break through and lead us into the work of striving for justice for all creation and the way of peace for our island home. In addition to presentations and discussions, the retreat will include worship, prayer experiences, and free time for fellowship and exploring Cathedral Ridge. Congregations are encouraged to send up to two leaders and advocates engaged or hoping to engage in the work of caring for creation, who can upon return share their learnings and experiences with their congregation. Cost: $75/per person. This retreat is made possible with the financial support of our diocesan regions.

Then justice will dwell in the wilderness, and righteousness abide in the fruitful field. The effect of righteousness will be peace, and the result of righteousness, quietness and trust for ever. (Isaiah 32:15-17)
