Hello, beloved in Christ. I bring you greetings today from Loyola University’s retreat center here in Woodstock, Illinois. With my bishop colleagues, we have gathered with black clergywomen from around the Episcopal church for a time of deep learning with the Reverend Dr. Renita Weems of deep prayer and of building community. Koinonia is a central task of the body of Christ. Koinonia is more than fellowship. It is deep spiritual connection. It is communion and spiritual tethering to one another, and Koinonia is essential for those of us who would follow Christ. Following Christ means that we must be people of peace in a world bent on violence. Following Christ means that we must be people of love and mercy in a world bent on vengeance. Following Jesus demands hard things of us, and we need community to keep us grounded to remind us that we are not alone as we walk this journey. This has been an intense time, but a good time, and it is my prayer that every Christ follower will experience the deep power and connection of Koinonia community. Blessings.
