Greetings, beloved in Christ. I hope that you are well on this day. This past Sunday, the church celebrated the Feast of Pentecost. That is our celebration of God’s gift of the Holy Spirit, our celebration of God’s continued presence in and among us in the here and now. For much of my life, I was convinced that we could only experience the Holy Spirit in hindsight. When we looked back on our life, we could see the places where the Holy Spirit showed up, where the Holy Spirit acted. And in recent years, I have been working hard on my own spiritual development, to be present, to be attentive to the Holy Spirit moving here and now.
And today, when I opened my daily devotion from the Society of St. John the Evangelist, I read these words, and I want to share them with you. Brother Jeffrey Tristram wrote, “God’s activity is not confined to what we do when we assemble to worship, not confined to what goes on inside church buildings. The spirit of God will not be confined, controlled, or contained. So stay alert and full of prayerful expectancy, so as to recognize the activity of the spirit, to see the Kingdom of God at work in unexpected places.”
My prayer for you is that you will tune your heart to witnessing the Holy Spirit present in the here and now, that you will look with prayerful expectation to all that God is doing here and now, and that you will be blessed this Pentecost season.
