Conflict Resolution
Conflict resolution in a congregational setting offers a structured and compassionate approach for conflicted parties to come together—often under the umbrella of shared baptismal identity—to work through disagreements and restore relational trust. Conflict is often present in congregational settings. Addressing conflict can be used to restore healthy relationships, establish clear communication guidelines, and re-establish role clarity and responsibilities. Conflict resolution requires the use of a third-party facilitator, often one of the Canons, who understands the rhythms of parish life, helps parties speak and listen safely to one another, identifies underlying needs and concerns, and supports the possibility of rebuilding mutual trust and respect. The desired outcome is to resolve the conflict, while working toward nurturing a healthier culture of communication in the congregation—stewarding relationships, mission, and ministry rather than allowing conflict to undermine them. If you are interested in exploring the need for conflict resolution in your parish, please contact the Rev. Canon Vanessa Stickler Glass at vanessa@episcopalcolorado.org, who can help you move forward.
